Risks for developing mental health issues
As a parents you can check if your daughter has mental health issues by being alert for certain signs and behaviors. Some common signs that may indicate she is struggling with mental health issues include:
-
Big changes in mood or personality: Sudden and big changes in mood or personality can be a red flag.
-
Frequent mood swings: If mood swings are frequent and interfere with daily life, it could be a sign that your daughter isn’t mentally strong.
-
Extreme worry, fear, or sadness: Persistent feelings of extreme worry, fear, or sadness lasting for at least two weeks.
-
Behavioral changes: Look out for extreme out-of-control behavior, frequent fights, self-harm tendencies, or actions that could harm themselves or others.
-
Substance use: Increased use of drugs or alcohol can be a cause for concern.
-
Difficulty concentrating: Trouble concentrating or staying still could be signs.
It's important that you pay attention to these signs and seek help from mental health professionals if you notice any concerning behaviors in your daughter. Early identification and intervention play a vital role in addressing mental health issues in teenagers.
Reach out to your child
If your daughter is a teenager, talk to her and ask her how she is feeling. If she is acting out, try to put your anger or frustration with her aside and to connect. Let her know that you’re there for her, in case she ever want to talk or need your support.
If she is not open to talking, it can be helpful to connect with her in other ways, such as doing an activity together. For instance, if the two of you enjoy painting, or baking together, that could be a way to bond with her, relieve stress, and help them express what she is feeling.
Take your child to a healthcare provider
Take your daughter to a healthcare provider such as their pediatrician, family doctor, primary healthcare provider, or therapist. They can help screen her for mental health conditions or refer you to a specialist who can.
